John Mascavage, David Pumpelly, John Brislin's:
Visit to East Africa

- The Barranco Camp -

Another fog-laden view into the valley below.

Journal:

"September 9, 1998 - Trek to Barranco (cont.) -

Éle has  taught us a song:

Kilimanjaro, Kilimanjaro, Kilimanjaro,
Kilimanjaro, mlima mrefu sana.
Na Mawenzi, na Mawenzi, na Mawenzi,
Na Mawenzi, mlima mrefu sana.
Ewe nyoka, ewe nyoka, ewe nyoka,
Ewe nyoka, mbona waninzungukaa.

It means:

Kilimanjaro, Kilimanjaro, Kilimanjaro,
Kilimanjaro, long mountain journey.
And Mawenzi, and Mawenzi, and Mawenzi,
And Mawenzi, long mountain journey.
As a snake, as a snake, as a snake,
As a snake, it winds all around."

(OK, it's a rough translation ;)

An action shot.
That is the monstrosity that we must ascend tomorrow - the Barranco Wall.  (Yes, it is as big as it looks).
Far to the left of the wall we can see up to the peak.  Clouds pass and clear.
Brislin.
Uhuru Peak, red in the sunset.  I do not recall a single plant on the hike here and yet these trees are suddenly all over.

These trees also only grow here around Kilimanjaro.  Uhuru Peak in the distance.
I have a passion for sunsets.
