Journal: We started our trip by flying into Frankfurt, Germany, but did not spend any time there beyond what it took to rent our little Fiat and drive out of it. We had no defined itinerary or schedule to keep, and instead looked at the map and selected the next place to go based on where we were and what info we garnered from a handy guidebook. We elected to follow the Romantische Strasse (Romantic Road), which passes a number of walled cities and other sites on its way to Munich. The first stop on our route: Heidelburg. Heidelburg is a beautiful city with old buildings and roads and with a river running through it. We found a hotel in the downtown area and walked around a bit that night through the city, but not much more than a glimpse and some dinner. The next morning we quickly set our sights on the local castle overlooking the city - most of the pictures you see here show various aspects of this castle. The main building was still in excellent shape and open to tours, while some of the surrounding structure and turrets had collapsed over the years. |

| The land surrounding the castle was quite expansive - this view is from the parking lot, looking over to the main buildings, and captures most of the core castle structure. | ![]() |

| This is the building to the right as you enter the courtyard from the main gate. It is covered in windows and and the walls themselves are very well decorated. | ![]() |
