John Mascavage Jr. & III's:
Tour of Germany - Neuschwanstein - |
![]() |
| This is actually from a postcard of the castle taken in the fall, and the real thing is every bit as breathtaking. | ![]() |
Journal: From Munich we traveled further south to Neuschwanstein - home of the fairytale castle of "Mad" King Ludwig II - and this castle is right out of a fairytale, simply amazing. The castle was constructed with thoughts of medieval times, but it was fitted with modern conveniences - a telephone, hot/cold running water, a plate warmer fed by warm air from the stove, and many other features well beyond most newly built homes of the times, much less a stone castle. |
| Another postcard shot, this time set in the winter with fog over the lake below. |

| Yes we did take some pictures of our own. This is a shot of the lake below the castle (the castle is above and behind us to the left). | ![]() |
| Another shot of the lake and distant peaks. | ![]() |
| I took this shot to capture the reflection of the peak in the lake. | ![]() |
| This is the family's summer home - Hohenschwangau Castle. It sits on a hill just opposite and lower than Neuschwanstein. Apparently foreigners are still not welcome visitors at the summer home. | ![]() |

| Another view as we approach the trailhead. | ![]() |
| The trail winds around below the castle, slowly gaining altitude. We walked, but you could go in a horse-drawn carriage. | ![]() |
| This shot is taken through the main gate used to enter Neuschwanstein. | ![]() |
| A open area just inside the gate where we wait for a tour to start - that is me in the shadow ion front of the tree. | ![]() |
| A look at the wall and gate used to enter the castle. | ![]() |
| Unfortunately you are not permitted to take pictures while inside the castle, which is a pity because it is an amazing mix of murals, hidden passages, and wood work. This graphic at right is one I found searching online to give you taste of what is inside. | ![]() |
| Behind the castle is a trail that takes you further up the hillside for a bird's eye view. This shot is taken from that trail looking down into a gorge and small waterfall below. | ![]() |
| My dad on the trail heading upward.. | ![]() |
| A shot of the Mary Bridge - the trail leads over this bridge and further up the hillside. | ![]() |
| A shot of the castle from a more parallel view. | ![]() |
| A little more close up. | ![]() |
