John Mascavage Jr. & III's:
Tour of Germany - Rothenburg - |
![]() |
| A postcard with an aerial view of the entire city. We stayed at a small hotel where the city extension heading toward the lower, right-hand corner meets the main body of the city. | ![]() |
Journal: From Heidelburg, we traveled further east on the Romantic Road to Rothenburg, a walled city that was kept repaired and close to its original layout - a veritable maze of buildings and arches. Rothenburg was quite commercial, but maintained a very quaint feel to it - never too crowded and plenty of interesting places to explore. . |
| A view of the city as we approached. |

| One more for good measure. |

| This picture was taken on our first night there, looking back down the road toward our hotel (we were heading into the downtown area). Our hotel is through the tunnel under the tower to the right of the building. |

| This picture on the postcard was one I found the next day - I got it because it seemed amusing that it matched the shot above. | ![]() |
| This is a similar view to the two pictures above only it takes in more of the surrounding buildings. The main plaza of the city is behind us. |

| The whole city is filled with buildings of these designs. This is the main plaza of the city from one angle... |

| and this rounds out the other side. The building to the right has a glockenspiel in its upper windows going off every hour and the building to the right has a large hall and restaurant. |

| This was looking off to a corner of the plaza (don't worry, we leave the plaza eventually). | ![]() |
| These are good representatives of what most of Rothenburg looks like - nice little houses and shops of various colors lined up along stone roads. | ![]() |
| The Golden Lamm Hotel - not where we stayed, but a nice one for a picture. |

| Yes, it's a door. Many of the houses had intricate doors like these - not something you grab at a local hardware store. | ![]() |
| There was one major church in Rothenburg, and it is very beautiful. As you can see here, it is tall, with long stained glass windows, and it has a tunnel running underneath. | ![]() |
| A shot taken from further away to capture more of the overall structure of the church. | ![]() |
| Each of the towers of the church was adorned with one or more statues placed close to the top. | ![]() |
| Here is a view from further back showing the main portion of the church and the twin towers beyond. | ![]() |
| Inside the church were a number of decorated areas for the Christmas season - here, a Christmas tree decorated with straw ornaments (which could be found in many of the shops). |

| A manger scene. |

| A view of the altar. |

| Here is a shot taken from the walkway along the wall of the city and looking along the wall to the distant tower. |

| This shot was taken of a store inside the wall, again looking down from the wall (the wall, as you can see, has a roof around it for the entire perimeter). |
![]() |
| This shot was taken down onto a house inside the walls - I picked this house for the shot because I really liked the yard. |

| This is one of the main towers of the city. Looking at the overview of the city on the postcard above this tower is near the top on the right-hand side. Each tower is a one-way street - this one was going out. | ![]() |
| Looking down onto a church in a small valley just below our hotel. |
![]() |
| Looking up from that church are back to the city. |

| A similar shot including the church and surrounding buildings. |
